the moon said

05.32am

so the moon spoke of praise and gratitude before she went off for the day.

she asked, “when one prays, does one utter more lament and despair, or joy and abundance? haven’t meister eckhart reminded us that ‘if the only prayer you say in your life is ‘thank you’, that would be enough’?”

she said, “if god is the friend, how would you speak with him? do you demand, demand, demand; request, request, request? or would you rather spend time with the friend conversing of something else in a completely different manner? what would be the proper adab? how would you be with a friend, the friend?”

the moon also spoke of sustenance and blessing. she mumbled, “they say, sustenance comes from unexpected directions (rezeki datang dari arah tak terduga).”

“do you know it [the sustenance] comes from that work you do for a company day in and day out? work that you bitch (hey moon, language please!) about every so often? that work, in truth, is a blessing from your sustainer. i bet you did not expect that,” she added, rather cheekily, but always with a hint of kind gentleness.

“from unexpected directions.” — that is, right before our very eyes. that work, that’s him handing us his blessing and a chance to connect. perhaps we have been too close to see.

the last thing i heard from the moon before she finished for the evening was the old saying: “when there is a will, there is a way”.

she repeated it in different ways.

when there is a Will, there is a Way.

when there is The Will, there is The Way.

when there is His Will, there is His Way.

she paused, said it one more time, ever so deliberately, “when there is a will, there is a way,” and smiled her beautiful smile.

thy will be done.
it makes
so much more
sense now.

and with that,
ibn ‘arabi’s hizb al-wiqaya
finished its recital
and the moon rested.

thank you.
